The Tamiya Grasshopper was really the first r/c kit that was marketed to the beginner. This buggy was powered by a Mabuchi rs-380 motor. This made the car run for a very long time. Most of the chargers of the time were not the quick 15 min. chargers we know today but the old slow chargers that took hours. Most of the examples you find today were modified to fit the larger and more common Mabuchi rs-540 motor. The suspension was the standard spring at each corner. Independent suspension in the front and solid live axle in the rear. With no dampers to speak of the name Grasshopper fit it well, this buggy is very bouncy. The gears were also a bit of a problem, they are located in a solid axle and were not as robust as they should've been. However these buggies did only cost $65.98 at the time so a few cost cutting measures were needed. I think everyone remembers owning one of these or knew someone that did. The Grasshopper was released during the explosion of the r/c off road craze and sold an obscene number of kits. It will be a great day when I am able to add one to my collection.
